Robert brought a simple acoustic demo to me called "Divorce Party" and it totally sparked my imagination for where the song could go. Rob's story and the melody relayed such a sense of confused frustration, and I later came up with the title/chorus tagline based on the James Dean movie title "Rebel Without a Cause" which seemed to glue the theme together.
When I recorded the drums, Sean Blute was hanging out at the Swamp with engineer Ryan Tuer, and he graciously drove back into Stratford to grab his sax. He did a bunch of takes for, what ended up being the balls-out solo. Definitely, one of our favourite parts on the record.
lyrics
Flame Without a Fire - Red Falcon / White Lightning
If I was to spend the rest of my life comin' and goin' whenever I please/
Would you still wanna be with me?/
If I was to spend the rest of my days fallin' down drunk, never changing' my ways/
Would you still wanna be with me?/ Would you still wanna be with me?/
Come on pretty girl now dry you're eyes/
The days are getting shorter and I think it's a sign/
That the clock is always tickin' so enjoy your life/
I'm a flame without a fire, watch me burn through the night/
They say I'm nothing' but a pale imitation of my brother/
I'm never gonna amount to one thing or another/
Do you still wanna be with me?/
And all I ever hear is "Man what a catch, how's a guy like you get a girl like that?"/
Do you still wanna be with me?/ Do you still wanna be with me?/
Come on pretty girl now dry you're eyes/
Days are getting shorter and I think it's a sign/
That the clock is always tickin' so enjoy your life/
I'm a flame without a fire, watch me burn through the night/
She says tell me about yourself and your plans/
If you wanna hang around, gotta lend a hand/
If you still wanna be with me, she said/ If you still wanna be with me/
Still, I never seen the point of rushin' into things/
Sometimes the biggest problem's a god damn ring/
Do you still wanna be with me?/ Do you still wanna be with me?/
So I guess in the end my biggest plan is to play my guitar and live off the land/
And that's good enough for me/ Yeah, that's good enough for me/
Said that's good enough me/
So, come on pretty girl now dry you're eyes/
The days are getting shorter and I think it's a sign/
That the clock is always tickin' so enjoy your life/
I'm a flame without a fire, watch me burn through the night/
Watch me burn through the night/
Watch me burn through the night/
Watch me burn through the night/
Watch me burn through the night/
Watch me burn through the night/
Watch me burn through the night/
Watch me burn through the night/
Said, I'm a flame without a fire watch me burn through the night
