When Robert sent me the demo for what eventually became "Run Back Jack" I was so excited at what I heard. Great abstract lyricism, and such a positive vibe. When we play live, this song feels like home everytime.
lyrics
Run Back Jack - Red Falcon / White Lightning
You better run back Jack, you better pick up the slack or be hangin' by it/
'Cause it's you and no one else, it's just you against yourself/
And it may be great, but don't you be late for dinner/
'Cause the table has been set, but it's soon about to turn/
So you headed down south for a couple of months to forget about it/
But your name is still the same, there's no startin' out again/
Well, the pawn and the king and the rook and the queen make it interesting/
But when the game is through, they all sleep in the same room
Took a ride on a train, just to get away/
Met my conscience and he asked me what had changed?/
I said, " Nothing man, I'm just tired of everything..."/
He said, "Before you lay all that you love upon the track…"
"You better Run Back Jack."
Jack says, "No friend of mine's gonna have a closed mind or be hypocritical"/
"Because what gives you the right? To put this price on life?"/
Now the view from the moon it cannot compare to what you're gonna find/
If you open up your mind, and see things from the other side/
Well, have you ever looked around in a lost and found and saw a picture of yourself?/
Turns out it's just a mirror, and your soul does not appear/
You see the face of a time and a place that you think is hopeless to return/
But my friend there's always time, if you play your cards just right/
Took a ride on a train, just to get away/
Met my conscience and he asked me what had changed?/
I said, " Nothing man, I'm just tired of everything..."/
He said, "Before you lay all that you love upon the track…"
"You better Run Back Jack."
When Jack comes back, years after the fact, he sees everything has changed/
The fields where he had worked, well they've all gone up in flames/
And, "I hate to say I told you so," is all that he could say
